ILONA SULIKOVA

My work has its roots in the geography of my life. Born in the Czech Republic, I lived there until 1968 and was always fascinated by the everyday skills of the people around me in a small, farming community. Artefacts and the way in which they were fashioned and decorated coloured my life. My other important influence is the years I spent working with Somali and Sudanese potters, being trained in the making of their highly skilled, but intuitively crafted, hand-built pots. I feel my work reflects the decorative arts of both cultures and I would hope that my pieces portray a unique synthesis of two very different worlds.
